Clear Direction

Darlene was our Toastmaster.

When defining words Keith doesn't obfuscate, which is a good thing since "obfuscate" was the word of the day. It means to cloud. confuse or bewilder.

Our incoming President, Dan Flick, was our topic-master. He wanted to know as a club, who are we and what are we trying to do. He also asked for suggestions on how to grow and wanted to know about a club marketing plan. He wanted answers that gave clear direction not answers that obfuscated the listeners.

The always clean shaven Keith gave the club a looking into the long history of shaving, from the caveman to today's resurgence of shaving with a straight razor.

Mike gave us a humorous look into the customer service policy of Safeway. He told stories of escorting customer around the store and letting them sample goodies.

New Officers and a Splendid Meeting

Our toastmaster Keith had his plate full at our last meeting. Aside from being Toastmaster he also gave a speech and acted as the food and joke provider.

The day's theme was Memorial Day. Jean brought the word of the day which was two words, resplendent and splendid.

In Keith's speech he explained the importance of community and the place that organized labors plays in it. Dan's speech asked the question, "Does air have weight?" He told us that because it does, altitude affects the boiling point.

During our topic session Jean had us talking about our experiences being an officer either in or out of Toastmasters.

Elect to Run for Office

Our club election for the new term starting July 1, 2011 will be held at our meeting. So far the only offices with people running are Secretary and Treasurer.

Although we had a few people missing from the agenda the meeting went smoothly, with members picking up the slack.

We had two guest who added to our meeting by participating in Roger's topic session. Roger's topic had members and guests speaking on various aspects of spring. Mike, our Toastmaster, hosted the meeting and explained Toastmasters and how our club runs.

In a moving speech, entitled "Why me", Jean talked about her blindness and how the doctors gave her back her sight and Toastmasters opened her eyes.

Spring Conference - Here We Come!

Our Toastmaster Jean gave a big plug for the District 2 conference, pointing our all the great benefits, such as educational opportunities, hearing the division contest winners, and meeting and making new friends.

Keith took his speaking to a higher level, literally. In his speech, "The ladder of Life" he talked about advancing professionally in the building trades industry.

Theresa, our club's quintessential story teller spoke about her time managing a furniture store and the problems she encountered when she wasn't able to get and employee to take care of his duties when she was away from the store. The outcome was a lost promotion and a lesson learned!

Jean then switched to Table Topics. She had us talking about conferences we have attended and what we've gained.

Keep It Going, Keep It Growing

Our Toastmaster, Dan Flick, started the meeting with a question: Do we want to keep the club going?

We had two interesting speeches. Keith Weir recalled his time in the Navy when "General Quarters" were called during tense time while serving in the middle east, in an aptly titled speech "The Day I turned Gray."

Mike DeLeon gave an informative speech about the changes he would like to see in the tax code with "Keep It Simple." Our "word of the day" was "renew" a good word for our spring season.

Theresa Frasch as our Topic Master noted the debut of the movie Water for Elephants based on the book of the same title. Topic questions ranged from the elephant in the room, to pink elephants, to movies based on books, and rides ant Disneyland.

We discussed Dan's at the business meeting. There is a consensus to continue but we do have to put out an effort to bring more people in. Our current year is coming to an end so it is time to think about officers for the next year. If you want to keep the club going this is a good place to begin.

The Club Fitness Team has suggested Four Open Houses and a SpeechCraft to help out membership grow. Burien Breakfast Toastmasters needs its members to step up and volunteer to chair each event. That would mean being the "go to" person for setting the dates, contacting the Club Fitness Team for speakers, getting a team together to help promote the event, making sure we had enough snacks, scheduling the room if we used it extra days, and assigning roles for the rest of Burien Breakfast members. If you want to keep the club going this is another good place to begin.

Spring Forward!

With great enthusiasm Theresa Frasch acted as our Toastmaster. With more sunshine, more birds singing in the morning and more color in our gardens Theresa chose Spring Forward as the meeting's theme. The theme was carried out by, our Topic Master, Mike DeLeon as he had the members talking about their favorite spring events such as their favorite spring sport, walk, festival, etc.

Doing speech number three from the manual, Keith Weir talked about how green jobs will save the economy. He covered such topics as solar power, wind power technologies to new construction and the retrofitting of old buildings.

Our word of the day was "defenestration" the act of throwing something out of a window. It comes from the Latin "de" meaning out and "fenestra" meaning window. In a sentence, "These new energy saving windows make it harder to defenestrate."

Keith got two evaluations for his speech, one from Darlene Burrill, and as a special treat, one from Theresa, as she practiced for the Division D Evaluation Contest conming up on April 15th.

Two Champions at Area Contest!

Congratulations to Roger Wells and Theresa Frasch! Our Burien Breakfast members represented our club with panache.

Roger and Theresa both arrived at ERAC in work clothes, but changed into more appropriate attire before the contest began. They each attended the participant briefing for their category and drew lots for their speaking order. As it happens, they both drew the number two spot in their event.

The speech contest was first. Roger surprised this writer by changing the title of his speech to "The Power of a Minor Event." It was a powerful change. Roger's speech was even more refined and polished last night than it was at the club contest. He was very effective as he looked down at the stage and seemed to talk to his dad in the cemetery. You could see and feel his passion as he spoke about Rosa Parks. I think everyone will remember Roger's message, "You never know how one simple act may inspire others - 30, 40, or even 100 years later."

After a short break we had the Evaluation Contest. The Guest Speaker was Cynthia Late with a speech titled, "I'm No Good at Speaking, Am I?" Theresa's evaluation pointed out three things that made the speech effective: Cynthia gave the audience a road map of where she was going with the speech, she made vivid pictures with her body language, and she used the stage to mark off time and accomplishments. Then three suggestions that she thought would improve the speech: Speak in one spot, look at one person and make a point; leave more time after each of her opening questions so the audience had time to answer the questions in their head; and the last one was to delineate her points better so that there was more distinction between them.

Roger Wells took home the Third Place Trophy for the Area 41 International Speech Contest. Theresa Frasch took home the First Place Trophy for the Area 41 Evaluation Contest. Congratulations to our Burien Breakfast members!

Club Contest

We finally had our Club Contest for the International Speech and Evaluation Contest. Jean Schmidt hosted the event as the Toastmaster of the morning.

Roger Wells and Darlene Burrill competed for the right to represent the club as a speech contestant for the Area Contest. Darlene spoke first - Living With Tragedy. Roger was next - Two Minor Events.

Next up was the Evaluation Contest. Lorylee Lejon from Soundwaves Toastmasters in Des Moines was our Guest Speaker. She gave a seven minute speech about using a vision board to make your dreams come true. The three evaluation contestants were (in the order they spoke): Darlene Burrill, Theresa Frasch, and Roger Wells. Each one of them gave a thoughtful and thorough evaluation of Lorylee's presentation.

Our congratulations go to Roger Wells for coming in First Place in the Speech Contest, and to Theresa Frasch for coming in First Place in the Evaluation Contest. We wish them luck as they move onto the Area Contest!

Snow Fooling!

Snow joke - we got snowed out of our Contest Meeting! But do not fear, we will hold it at our next meeting, March 10th at 7am sharp. Jean Schmidt will be the Contest Toastmaster. She has a surprise guest speaker lined up for the evaluation contest. And I am sure we will have some interesting speeches (with some extra practice time) lined up for the competition as well. Let's get ready to COMPETE!

It's Contest Season!

Jean Schmidt was our Toastmaster and talked about the benefits of entering the International Speech Contest. Bang Parkinson brought our word for the day: "Colloquial" meaning the informal use of a word.

We had two manual speeches. Theresa Frasch spoke from an advanced manual giving us all a lesson on making a cold sales call. Keith Weir explained the benefits of the apprenticeship available to graduating high school seniors. Our topic master Roger Wells had us handling different diversity situations.

Win The Future!

Our Toastmaster Keith Weir played off President Obama's State of the Union address and picked "Win the Future" for the Theme of the Day. Dan Flick gave his Ice Breaker Speech about what the future will hold for him with a speech titled, "What Do You Want to Be When You Grow Up?" We got to learn about how Dan started out fulfilling two of his childhood dreams at once by being a "cowboy truck driver" and how he has progressed since then.

Darlene Burrill gave an After Dinner speech (or was it an After Breakfast Speech?) about what happens after dinner and how it has changed through the years.

Roger Wells challenged us to use the words criterion and criteria correctly while we answered Table Topic questions by Bang Parkinson about how we can create jobs in the United States. Our members were up to the challenge with answers that included immigration reform, challenging fraud, and improving education.

At our business meeting we discussed Dues will soon be due - so remember to bring a check for $30 to one of the February meetings. Make it out to Burien Breakfast Toastmasters. Also, Contest Season is upon is. Our Club Contest will be February 24th. Let Jean Schmidt know if you want to be a contestant in the International Speech Contest or the Evaluation Contest.

Rein it In or Let it Rain?

It is the new year and time to sharpen those Toastmaster skills. With Bang Parkinson as our Toastmaster we had two speeches with the aim of improving our club.

Theresa Frasch led a group discussion on building membership. Using community bulletin boards, Craigslist and blogs were some of the suggestions which came out of Theresa's discussion.

Jean Schmidt handed out copies of the Toastmaster's promise and talked about member's duties being a member.

Mike Deleon gave us three words of the day. "Rein" a verb to hold back. "Reign" a noun the rule of a leader. "Rain" a noun liquid from the sky. We had a spirited topic session talking about what should be taxed and what should be spent.

Big Words

Wishing everyone a Merry Christmas, Season greetings, Happy New Year.. Our next meeting is January 13th, 2011. Hope to see a big crowd at our next meeting. A big welcome to our newest member Dan Flick.

Our Toastmaster Theressa Frasch, noting that it was the anniversary of publication of the first American dictionary, used Noah Webster for the day's theme. Webster, as well a bringing out the first US dictionary, also published the first America spelling book, and was a lobbyist helping to created our country's copyright laws.

If you have to do a presentation at work our club is a great place to practice. That is what Bang Parkinson did. The club acted as the school board while she did a PowerPoint presentation on bringing a new copier system to the school district.

Another great thing about the club is the things you learn. Roger Wells shared his knowledge of the development of the calender with the club. If you worry about the Ides of April. Beware on April 13th not the 15th.

Mike DeLeon brought three words of the day. Ultimate, Penultimate, and Antepenultimate. Ultimate is the last in a series, the end, whereas penultimate is the second to the last in a series and antepentultimate is the third to last.

Infused with Veteran's Day

Our last meeting was at the Infusion Cafe because the ERAC was closed for Veteran's Day. Darlene Burrill was our Toastmaster with the theme of Veteran's Day which was also the topic with a bit of a twist. Our topic master Jean Schmidt had us getting into character as we described veterans in different periods of history. Mike DeLeon paid tribute to his five uncles telling their World War II and Korean war experiences. Theresa Frasch gave us a lesson on seminars.

Give Me Liberty

October 28th 1886 was the dedication of the Statue of Liberty so our Toastmaster, Mike DeLeon, used that his theme of the meeting, giving us some history and statistical data on the monument.

Carrying along with the theme Jean Schmidt brought us the word "Freedom".

Kieth Weir gave a speech where he talked about the different stages of Halloween. He spoke how as we age we change our view of the holiday. Roger Wells in a speech titled "Why Do They Do It?", he wondered people feel they have to exagerate their public resumes.

Since Keith was also Table Topics Master, members had a chance to express opinions of Halloween duringTable Topics.

Our next meeting is November 11th which is Veteran's Day so ERAC will be closed. We will be meeting at Infusion Tea & Coffee (15607 1st Ave So). See the Schedules and Roles page for who's doing what.

Change in Venue for Veterans Day

We have a change in venue for our meeting on November 11 - Veterans Day. Our normal location will be closed for the holiday. Instead of not meeting we will move our meeting to a local coffee shop: Infusion Tea & Coffee:

The Icebreaker

Our last meeting was a real treat. We heard one of our favorite kinds of speeches, the ice breaker, from our newest member Michael Reid. He gave us a bit of his personal history and talked about his need to always be improving. He has certainly come to the right place by joining Toastmasters.

We got a preview of the area speech contest when three of the contestants, Roger Wells, Theresa Frasch, and Darlene Burrill practiced their contest speeches. The practice paid off. All gave much improved speeches and gave great performances. Darlene brought home the 3rd place trophy in the Humorous Speech contest!

Our last meeting was our club's humorous speech contest. We have a great contestant in Roger Wells. He entertained the club talking about the adventure in growing old. The winner of our topic contest was Darlene Burrill.

Area 41 Fall Contest

A Serendipitous Meeting

We had a great open house meeting. Theressa Frasch, our Toastmaster, used speaking lessons from "The Karate Kid" as her theme. We got some great advice such as get help, practice, if something works keep it up, and discipline and respect always win.

If you had an occasion to use the word "serendipity" after our meeting that was serendipity, a marvelous coincidence. Roger Wells brought us the word serendipity.

Since last week was the start of school our topic master Mike DeLeon asked us to talk about some of our school memories.

With an election coming up Kieth Weir used the occasion to give a speech on referendum 52. He was able to fit it into the TM manual lesson 9 speaking to persuade. Jean Schmidt spoke from the advance manual and talked on how Toastmasters changed her life.

September 23rd is our club humorous speech contest where we will chose someone to represent our club at the Area Humorous Speech Contest.
